The past year has been quite interesting for comic book lovers of both DC and Marvel camps. There has been quite an explosion of new shows and each one keeps getting better than the previous one! I used to consider the series; Gotham as my favorite of the bunch but today after watching the first episode of Daredevil I’ve changed my mind. I can’t wait to see the next episode of Daredevil!
I’ve compiled the list of popular comic book based/inspired TV shows below;
“Matt Murdock was blinded as a boy in a tragic accident. An accident that also gave him extraordinary senses. Practicing as an attorney in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City by day, he fights as a masked vigilante at night.”
“Explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon. He is still a detective but he has yet to meet Batman and the villains who made Gotham City so famous.”
The Flash [link]
“The Flash is the story of Barry Allen, a police scientist who is the victim of a freak accident. While working late, his lab is hit by lightning. The blast shatters a number of vials, so Barry is both electrocuted and bathed in dozens of chemicals. When he recovers, Barry finds that he has gained the ability to move at almost impossible speed.”
“Arrow is a modern retelling of the DC Comic character Green Arrow. Multi-millionaire playboy Oliver Queen is missing, and presumed dead after a shipwreck at sea. He is found five years later, having survived on a desert island off his wits and by mastering the bow and arrow. When he returns to Starling City however, he discovers that it is rife with corruption and crime. Oliver decides to put his skills to use by taking on the persona of Arrow and becoming the vigilante that Starling City needs.”
Agent Carter [link]
“In 1946, Agent Peggy Carter is grounded after World War II, stuck in administrative work at the Strategic Scientific Reserve. However, industrialist Howard Stark asks for Peggy’s help clearing his name when his weapons are used to spread death and destruction”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D [link]
“Based on Marvel’s fictional government organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. It shows that not all heroes have to be super. Agent Phil Coulson (The Avengers) recruits a new team to go into the field and handle any cases involving the strange and the bizarre.”
Ok this post is not actually about the TV shows aired on local channels during Ramadan but just an update on whats on my playlist this month. Shorter working hours for the whole month is the perfect time for me to catch up with my brother on our regular TV shows.
Suits [link] This is a show I just started watching last night. The basic theme of the show is a lawyer drama, much like Boston Legal or The Practice. The pilot was really interesting and I’ll be following the rest of the series soon.
Dexter [link] Ok now I know most of you are already on season 6 or whatever but I was supposed to get the whole series from my brother and there was a hard drive ‘incident’ which involved a shit load of TV shows being lost but anyway I have the first few seasons on my media server now. This show is probably the most unique series you’ll ever encounter. The protagonist is actually a serial killer but he has a strict code that he adheres to and that’s the whole show. I’m on season 2 at the moment and things are getting really tense.
Lie To Me [link] This is a ‘Who dunnit’ series with a new angle. The crimes are solved based on reading people’s expressions and body language. The concept of the show is very intriguing to me and I’m already at the end of season 1 of this show. Tim Roth is entertaining in his role as a ‘micro expression’ expert.
Tiger and Bunny [link]
I came across this series as I was going through some model kits online and the theme of the show seemed interesting to me. A city that’s protected by corporate sponsored super heroes! Sounds kinda lame yet I’m drawn to it somehow. I haven’t started watching it yet but the intro and trailers were entertaining.
Full Metal Alchemist [link]
This is also one of those shows that I’ve been meaning to watch for a long time now. I don’t know what the hype is but apparently some fans swear that this anime is one of the best shows ever made. I watched a few episodes and can’t say that this is the best , however, it is interesting.
I was looking for episodes of ‘The Nutt House‘ when I came across this page with a list of shows from the 80’s, many of which were aired on KTV2 during the golden era of Kuwait TV.Here’s the [link]
If you’re a child of the 80’s like me then you’ll probably remember shows like; Automan, Manimal, Blue Thunder, Misfits of Science, Highwayman and the Nutt House. Speaking of the Nutt House, I wasn’t aware that it was a series by Mel Brooks! Heck I wasn’t even aware of Mel Brooks till I entered college. I managed to find the pilot episode on YouTube
Over the past few months I’ve had to be very selective about the shows I’m watching coz lately I seem to have only half the free time I previously had. Its sucks seeing the Terabytes worth of shows on my drives and not enough time to watch them all. I seriously need a vacation just to catch with TV and books.
If exclaiming ‘WTF’ or ‘Holy Shit’ during each and every episode is any indication of how good a show is then this is pretty much the best show I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve completed 3 seasons so far and have taken a short break before I start season 4. If you’re watching only one show for the whole year then this is it.
Its always sunny in Philadelphia
This show was highly recommended by a friend of mine and I can see why this is a popular series. Each episode is just 20 minutes and are just fricking hilarious.
Adult Swim used be a huge favorite with my brother and myself and this reminds us of the good old days. Archer is a spy series but this is not like any series you’ve ever seen before. (Warning: Adult content)
When I first saw the character designs for the new Thundercats series I was a little disappointed and I thought they might mess it up but boy was I wrong! The new series started off with an awesome two part episode and I was left thirsting for more. Thankfully they’ve decided to go with a darker more mature approach to the series and from the looks of things there’s bound to be a lot of exciting twists coming up in future episodes.
The studio also paid homage to the original series by incorporating some of the classic sound effects and lines and the best part was probably that the voice actor for Lion-O in the original show was the voice of Lion-O’s father Claudus in the new series. Snarf does NOT have a speaking voice and that’s a good thing, lol!
I’m also excited about the new line of action figures that Bandai has released and I might buy some of the 4 inch and 8 inch versions for my collection. I don’t think I’ll buy the classic ones from e-bay since they’re so expensive now.
Your TV has a service menu, accessible only thru a special key combination, which allows you to set White Balance, total ‘On’ time and other service details. Here’s a link with a list of major manufacturers and their service codes; [RiddleTV.com]
It was interesting to note that my 4 year old LCD has done only 7082 hours out of an estimated 65,000 hours. I guess this goes to show you that total life of your Plasma/LCD/LED does not matter when its for home use.
Here’s yet another update on my TV shows watch-list. Even though time is always a problem I manage to squeeze in an episode or two of the shows that I have on my playlist;
House MD [TV.com]
I never figured I’d be hooked to a medical drama but this show is not at all like Greys Anatomy or E.R. Hugh Laurie is brilliant as Dr. House and he carries forward the same wit and mannerisms you would have seen in Black Adder or Bit of Fry and Laurie. This is a must-see series.
Bit of Fry and Laurie[TV.com]
This is a hilarious collection of bits by Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. If you liked the comedy style of Monty Python and Black Adder then this is straight up your alley.
Once again this is another series that I wasn’t too keen on watching but once I started I got hooked to the comedy style. Its almost like Arrested Development but in a more family friendly setting. PLUS it has Sofia Veraga in it 😀
Warehouse 13 [TV.com]
I’m a huge Sci-Fi fan and love shows like Fringe, V and X-Files but for the love of god avoid this series if you’re a fan of the aforementioned shows.
An idiot abroad [TV.com]
This show grew out of a comment made by Karl Pilkington on the popular Ricky Gervais podcat and became a hit TV show. I loved this guy on the podcast and hes even better on TV
I don’t even understand American football but one thing I follow each year are the TV commercials and half time shows. Here’s a link to the ads from this year. One of my favorites is the VW Darth Vader commercial. 😀
Last week I started watching Top Gear US edition while I was waiting for next episodes of the UK edition to come out. Now I wasn’t too keen on the US version coz my previous experience with Top Gear Australia wasn’t too good and I gave up watching it after the first season. Maybe it had to do with the hosts of the show. I’ve been a fan of the British series since the 90’s and Jeremy Clarkson does quite well as a auto-show host and you either love him to bits or hate his guts.
The US edition is hosted by Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood and they have a mighty task ahead of them to make this show as good as the original series. Top Gear’s claim to fame are their crazy over-the-top stunts and one hour specials which take place in remote locations on the globe. If Top Gear USA can match them or even beat them then they’ve got it made.
This guy is like an Indian version of Weird Al Yankovich but hes not as funny as Weird Al. I think these videos used to air on MTV India about 10 years. Recently one of my colleagues happened to mention him and I thought I’d check to see if his videos were on Youtube.. and they are!
